Chapter 9
“Jayden, today! Are you coming or what?” May hollered from outside the house for, like, the hundredth time. Jayden gritted his teeth and worked faster to get everything done.
The morning had been busy for everyone. Far too busy for Jayden and Mal to even see each other. Jayden had spent the morning writing his dissertation, fully immersed in the free flow of his thoughts. He saw clearly in his mind how the text would shape up, how the content gained richness of meaning, how the finished version would eventually look. He had been doing so well, in fact, that May had had to call him several times before he saved the dissertation and shut his laptop to run outside and join the family for lunch in Arlena’s Summer Snow diner.
After they’d all eaten to their hearts’ content—or their stomachs’ content, to be precise—the conversation took off. More to the point, innuendo and insinuations complete with flirtatious and suggestive comments from Emily and Charlie that were directed at Mal and Jayden.
And Jayden found himself enjoying every moment of this excruciating torture.
“So, where are you two going this evening on your date?” Emily emphasized the last word, adding an amused giggle quickly joined by one from Charlie.
“Never you mind, missy,” Mal retorted calmly, exchanging glances with Jayden, who could barely keep a straight face.
First Jayden and Mal were bombarded with questions like what they were going to wear and what they were going to eat and what movie were they going to see. Then, not getting any answers, Emily and Charlie started bombarding them with a host of suggestions, from what type of foods functioned as aphrodisiacs and ending with the best place to stop a truck for a steaming hot make-out session—at which point Mal was looking like a rising thunderstorm.
Before he erupted, however, a dark-haired cowboy-looking man in his midthirties approached with an anxious look on his face. He softly touched the rim of his bluish cowboy hat as a greeting before speaking to Mal.
“Hi, Simon,” Mal greeted the man who barely smiled. Oh, the first one of Mal’s friends Jayden had the privilege to meet. Seemed like a good enough guy, he thought, giving him the once-over.
“Have you seen this?” Simon asked worriedly and held out a flyer. Frowning with curiosity, Mal took the flyer and looked at it. Then his face changed color from his usual tanned to bright red with a mixture of shame and anger. He actually growled, scrunching the edges of the flyer in his clenching hands. Jayden was immediately concerned to the point of anxiety.
“What is it?” Emily asked in a hurry and snagged the flyer off his hands, looking at it. She let out a gasp. “What the fuck—”
May was about to scold her daughter for cussing when she pushed the flyer swiftly against Jayden’s chest. Astonished, Jayden turned the flyer around to see it. And then he hoped he hadn’t. There was a black-and-white picture that was a little granular due it being only a copy.
